Homestead is on a mission to build a national network of community-based, holistic and therapeutic supported-housing for people with a diagnosis of psychosis.
A Mental Health Crisis
An Introduction
Schizophrenia and psychosis affects approximately 700,000 people in the UK, with an annual cost to the NHS of around £5 billion, accounting for 30% of adult mental health spending.* Despite significant investment in hospital and residential care, outcomes remain suboptimal for many, with high relapse rates, revolving-door admissions, and inadequate support for long-term recovery.
Despite the ongoing transformation of mental health services and the emphasis on keeping individuals within their communities and out of hospital settings, there is still a significant gap in providing adequate support.
Few places across the UK can offer safe, structured environments that serve as a buffer between hospital and independent living. Those places that do exist are generally run at huge cost by profit-making private healthcare providers, achieving low levels of recovery with high rates of relapse.

The Goal
A Community Network
Homestead aims to fill the gap in the UK mental health care system. Our aim is to make the Homestead Community Network as significant for mental illness as Maggie’s Centres are for cancer care.
Each Homestead, whether rural or urban, will be set in a place close to nature with holistic, relational care and design excellence at its heart, while fostering a sense of purpose and belonging through arts and nature-based social enterprise.

Clinical & Operational Model
Our professional clinical team is led by Dr Andrew Howe with support from Dr Rex Haigh and Dr Peter Cockersell. We are currently working collaboratively with Dr Alberto Salmoiraghi, Head of Mental Health for North Wales, to develop our Pilot Project and establish an innovative care model, which can be rolled out nationwide.
